A Most Irregular Threat: Old Gas Regulators Can Present Mercury Exposure
نویسنده
چکیده
How nephrotoxic is carboplatin? Sir-The study by Sleijfer et al. (1989) reports on a significant deterioration in renal function following moderate dose carboplatin-with a 19% reduction in glomerular filtration rate. This raises reservations about the claimed advantages of carboplatin over cisplatin and suggests that not only is close monitoring of renal function necessary, but also that hyperhydration regimens should be considered. Should this be true, one of the major benefits of carboplatin, namely its convenient administration at standard dose in an outpatient setting, would disappear. We have reviewed the data on 28 patients given high dose carboplatin as a single agent for ovarian cancer in whom sequential glomerular filtration rate (GFR) assessments were determined before, during and after carboplatin therapy.

Elemental Mercury Spills
Sources of elemental mercury (Hg0) include old natural gas regulators, manometers, sphygmomanometers, thermometers, and thermostats. Causes of Hg0 spills include improper storage, container breakage, children playing with Hg0, the breakage of devices containing Hg0, and ritualistic use of Hg0. Inhalation is the primary exposure route for Hg0. Mercury released into the environment can enter lake...
متن کاملResidential Mercury Spills from Gas Regulators
Many older homes are equipped with mercury-containing gas regulators that reduce the pressure of natural gas in the mains to the low pressure used in home gas piping. Removal of these regulators can result in elemental mercury spills inside the home. In the summer of 2000, mercury spills were discovered in the basements of several Chicago-area homes after removal of gas regulators by gas compan...

Backgrounds and Objectives: Mercury is a heavy metal that is widespread in the environment and has many toxic effects. At present, MeHg exposure on women remain an important issues for researching, especially those of continuous uptake in high-fish consumption.MeHg can be transferred to infant through breast milk. The objective of this study was to characterize the risk of Hg exposure in mother...

Background and objectives: Methyl mercury can carry out harmful effects on the reproductive, respiratory, and nervous system of human. Moreover, mercury is known as the most toxic heavy metal in nature. Fish and seafood consumption is the major MeHg exposure route for human. The present study tries to cover researches which have been conducted on mercury levels in 21 species of fish from Persia...
متن کاملIncreased Release of Mercury from Dental Amalgam Fillings due to Maternal Exposure to Electromagnetic Fields as a Possible Mechanism for the High Rates of Autism in the Offspring: Introducing a Hypothesis
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), factors such as growing electricity demand, ever-advancing technologies and changes in social behaviour have led to steadily increasing exposure to man-made electromagnetic fields. Dental amalgam fillings are among the major sources of exposure to elemental mercury vapour in the general population. Although it was previously believed that low ...
